Divan Bed or Bed Frame? It Is Mostly a Doorway Question
A divan is a bed built as an upholstered box. The mattress sits on top of a padded base rather than on slats inside a frame, and the base normally splits into two halves that bolt together. That construction is the whole comparison: it decides the floor space, the height, the storage, and above all whether the bed can physically get into the room.
What a divan bed actually is
Two upholstered half-bases, joined in the middle, standing on castors or short legs, with a headboard bolted to the base if you want one. The mattress is a separate purchase and sits loose on top. Storage, when there is any, is drawers built into the sides of the base.
A bed frame is the opposite construction: side rails, a head and foot end, and a slatted or mesh base spanning between them. It arrives flat packed and is assembled in the room.

The floor space difference is real
A divan takes up almost exactly the mattress size, because the base is the mattress footprint. A frame adds the rails around it. On a king size, a divan occupies roughly 150 x 200 cm while a frame occupies around 160 x 208 cm, and an upholstered or ottoman frame more again.

Getting it into the room
This is where the two genuinely differ, and where most guides say nothing at all.
A divan half-base is a single rigid object roughly 100 cm by the width of the bed. It cannot be made smaller. It has to go through every doorway, up every stair and round every turn in one piece. A standard UK internal door is 762 mm wide, so a king size half-base at 150 cm goes through on its edge or not at all, and a turn at the top of a staircase is where divans get stuck.
A bed frame arrives flat. The longest box on a king size frame is about 2.2 m, which is awkward on a stair turn but can be angled, and every other part is small. If your stairs have a tight turn, a landing under about 90 cm, or a loft conversion with a low bulkhead, the frame is the safer choice and it is not close.
Before you order either, measure the narrowest point of the route, not the doorway of the bedroom.
Storage: drawers or a lifting base
Divan drawers are convenient but they need clear floor beside the bed to open, usually around 45 cm on the drawer side, and that floor has to stay clear. If the bed sits against a wall on one side, you lose those drawers.
An ottoman frame lifts the whole base instead, giving storage across the entire footprint and needing about 40 cm clear at the foot or along one side to open. It stores far more, but it needs the headroom to lift and you have to take everything off the bed first.
Which one suits which room
- Tight room, wide access: divan. The smaller footprint wins.
- Tight stairs or a turn: frame. It goes in flat.
- Maximum storage: ottoman frame, then divan drawers, then open frame.
- You want a headboard that makes the room: frame. Headboards are part of the design rather than an accessory bolted on.
- You want to keep your mattress: either, both take a standard UK mattress.
