We publish the outside frame dimensions on every product page, not just the mattress size. A 4ft6 double mattress is 135 x 190 cm, but the frame around it is usually 145 to 150 cm wide, and that is the number that decides whether the door opens. Measure the wall, then check the frame size.

Metal frames are the least expensive and the quickest to build. Wooden frames are heavier and quieter. Upholstered frames give you a padded headboard to sit against. Ottoman frames lift on gas pistons and give you the whole floor area of the bed as storage.

All frames are supplied flat packed with fittings and instructions, delivered in 3 to 5 working days to UK mainland addresses. Mattresses are sold separately.

The numbers

UK bed sizes and frame dimensions

Six standard sizes. The frame is always bigger than the mattress it holds, usually by 6 to 10 cm in width and 8 cm in length, and the frame is what has to fit the room and get through the door.

Room check

Which bed size fits your room?

Take the width of the wall the bed will sit against, subtract the frame width, and what is left is your walkway. Below 60 cm on the only open side, the room stops working, whatever the bed looks like in the photo.

Two numbers people forget: a wardrobe in front of the bed needs 90 cm to open its doors, and an ottoman frame needs 40 cm clear at the foot or along one side to lift.

Logistics

Delivery, assembly and returns

Frames arrive flat-packed in 2 to 3 boxes (30 to 60 kg in total). Two people assemble a king size bed frame in 45 to 90 minutes with the tools in the box.

  2. Delivered to the room you chooseOn request, the crew carries the boxes upstairs. Check the stairwell: the longest box is about 2.2 m.
  3. Build it in 45 to 90 minutesTwo people, the Allen key and bolts are in the box. Ottoman pistons come fitted.
  4. 100 nights to decideReturn an unused frame in its packaging within 100 nights. Collection arranged by us, from your door.

  • 100 nights to change your mind on an unassembled frame in its original packaging, collected from your address.
  • 14 day legal right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, on top of those 100 nights.
  • Dispatched from UK stock, flat packed. Nothing ships from outside the UK, so there are no import charges.

Bed frame FAQ

What is the difference between the mattress size and the frame size?

The mattress size is the standard UK size, for example 135 x 190 cm for a double. The frame is the thing you actually put in the room, and it is normally 6 to 10 cm wider and 8 cm longer, because of the side rails and the headboard. We publish both on every product page.

Do your bed frames come with a mattress?

No. Every frame here is sold frame only, with its base included, so you can keep the mattress you already have or buy one separately.

Which bed size should I buy?

Measure the wall the bed will sit against. Leave at least 60 cm to walk past on the open side, 75 cm if you want a bedside table. Then take the largest size that still leaves that gap. The size chart gives the minimum room for each.

Will a European mattress fit a UK bed frame?

No. European sizes are different: a European double is 140 x 200 cm against the UK 135 x 190 cm, and a European king is 160 x 200 cm against the UK 150 x 200 cm. A European mattress will not sit inside a UK frame.

How long does a bed frame take to build?

Between 30 and 90 minutes for two people, depending on the size and the type. Metal frames are the quickest, ottoman frames the slowest because of the lifting mechanism. The tools and fittings are in the box.
