Small Double Bed Frames
A small double, sometimes called a 4ft or a three quarter bed, takes a mattress of 120 x 190 cm. That is 30 cm wider than a single and 15 cm narrower than a double.
It is the size that rescues a room that cannot take a double. Two adults fit, tightly; one adult has room to spread out. The frame is usually about 126 cm wide on the outside.
Bedding is the one catch: small double duvets and sheets exist but are stocked less widely than double, so buy the set at the same time as the frame.

Room check
Will a small double fit my room?
Minimum room for a small double: 2.5 m x 3.0 m with one walkway of 60 cm. It is the size that rescues a room that cannot take a full double: 15 cm narrower, and that 15 cm is often the whole argument.
Two adults fit, tightly. One adult has room to spread out. Measure wall to wall and note where the door swings.

Frames arrive flat-packed in 2 to 3 boxes (30 to 60 kg in total). Two people assemble a king size bed frame in 45 to 90 minutes with the tools in the box.

Small double bed FAQ
What size is a small double bed?
120 x 190 cm, or 4ft x 6ft3. It sits between a single (90 cm) and a double (135 cm). The frame around it is normally about 126 x 198 cm.
Is a small double big enough for two people?
For two adults it is tight: 60 cm each, against 67.5 cm in a double and 75 cm in a king size. It works for a guest room, a smaller bedroom or one adult who wants the extra width.
Can I use double bedding on a small double?
No, it will hang badly. Small double bedding is a separate size and is stocked less widely than double, so buy the set at the same time as the frame.
Does a small double bed come with a mattress?
No. Frames are sold frame only. It takes a standard UK small double mattress, 120 x 190 cm.
Small double or double?
If the room is at least 2.65 m wide, take the double: bedding is cheaper and easier to find. Below that, the small double is the one that fits.
