Will a King Size Bed Fit My Room?

A king size bed fits a room that is at least 2.8 m wide and 3.0 m long, with one 60 cm walkway. For two walkways and bedside tables you need about 3.2 m by 3.4 m. Here is how to check your own room in five minutes.

Step 1: measure the frame, not the mattress

The mattress is 150 x 200 cm. The frame is bigger: 159 to 175 cm wide and 207 to 229 cm long across the king size beds sold here, with the widest and the longest both being upholstered frames. Use the outside size printed on every product page. If you do not have one yet, use 160 x 215 cm.

Step 3: three room layouts that work

• Room 2.8 x 3.0 m (the minimum): bed against one wall, one 60 cm walkway, one bedside table, an end-lift ottoman for storage instead of a wardrobe at the foot.
• Room 3.2 x 3.4 m (the typical UK master bedroom): bed centred on the long wall, 75 cm each side, two bedside tables, 90 cm in front of a wardrobe at the foot.
• Room 3.6 x 4.0 m: room for a super king (180 x 200 cm) with 75 cm each side, or a king with a chest of drawers on the side.

Step 4: check the door and the stairs

Frames arrive in 2 or 3 flat boxes; the longest box is about 210 cm. Check that the stairs and the bedroom door allow a 210 cm box to turn. Headboards are the widest single part (150 to 165 cm).

If it does not fit

• Room under 2.8 m wide: choose a king size storage bed with drawers instead of a wardrobe, or a metal king size bed, the narrowest frames (155 cm).
• Room under 2.6 m: a double (135 x 190 cm) keeps a walkway; a king will not.
• Sloping ceiling: put the headboard under the slope and choose a low headboard (84 cm) or a side-lift ottoman.
