King Size Bed Dimensions

A UK king size bed is 150 cm wide and 200 cm long (5ft x 6ft 6in, or 60 x 78 inches). That is the mattress size. The bed frame around it is bigger: on the frames we sell, 153.5 to 175 cm wide and 207 to 229 cm long, depending on the headboard and footboard.

A king size bed is 15 cm wider and 10 cm longer than a double, and 30 cm narrower than a super king. Each sleeper on a king gets 75 cm, the same as a single bed.

King size bed frame dimensions (outside measurements)

The frame adds 7 to 12 cm to the width and 14 to 19 cm to the length of the mattress. Measure the frame, not the mattress, when planning your room.

How much room do you need for a king size bed?

A king size bed fits comfortably in a room at least 3.2 m wide and 3.4 m long. The minimum is about 2.8 m x 3.0 m with one walkway.

• Walkway: 60 cm minimum on one side, 75 cm on both sides to make the bed easily.
• Bedside tables: add 45 to 50 cm on each side.
• Wardrobe facing the bed: 90 cm to open the doors; 60 cm for sliding doors.
• Ottoman bed: 40 cm free at the foot (end lift) or at one side (side lift) to open it.
• Drawer bed: 45 cm free on the drawer side.

Choose a king size bed if you are two adults and your room is at least 2.8 m wide. Choose a super king only if the room is 3.4 m or wider, because you lose the walkways otherwise. Full comparison: king vs double vs super king.

King size bed dimensions in the UK vs other countries

A UK king (150 x 200 cm) is smaller than a US king (193 x 203 cm); a US queen (152 x 203 cm) is the closest US size. A European king is 160 x 200 cm and will not fit a UK king frame.

Which mattress fits a king size bed?

Any UK king size mattress (150 x 200 cm) fits a UK king size bed frame. Check the maximum mattress height on the frame: ottoman beds set a limit, because the gas pistons are rated for a given mattress weight. See king size beds.

Is 200 x 200 cm a king size bed?

No. A UK king size bed is 150 cm wide and 200 cm long. The 200 is the length, not the width, and that is where the confusion comes from. A mattress measuring 200 x 200 cm is an emperor, which is not a standard UK size and is normally made to order.

Two other 200s catch people out. A European king is 160 x 200 cm, ten centimetres wider than ours. A European super king is 180 x 200 cm, which happens to match the UK super king exactly.

What is a 7ft by 7ft bed called?

Roughly 213 x 213 cm, and it has no standard UK name. The largest standard UK size is the super king, 180 x 200 cm. Above that you are into non-standard sizes made to order: an emperor is usually 200 x 200 cm and a caesar around 240 x 200 cm. Full detail in the emperor bed size guide. Bedding for those sizes is specialist and has to be ordered with the bed, which is the practical reason almost nobody goes above super king.

Getting the bed into the room: doorways, stairs and corners

The bed fitting the bedroom is only half the problem. Flat-packed frames arrive in two or three boxes, and the longest box on a king size frame is about 2.2 m. That box, not the assembled bed, is what has to get up the stairs.

• Doorways. A standard UK internal door is 762 mm (2ft 6in) wide. A king size mattress is 150 cm wide, so it goes through on its edge, not flat. Rolled mattresses solve this outright.
• Stairs. Measure the narrowest point, usually the turn at the top, and the ceiling height above the stairs. A 2.2 m box needs the diagonal, not the tread width.
• Corners. To swing a 2.2 m box round a right angle you need the two corridor widths to add up to more than the box length. If the landing is 90 cm and the corridor is 90 cm, a 2.2 m box will not turn.
• Headboard height. Our frames run 84 to 147 cm from the floor. Under a sloping ceiling or a dormer, measure the ceiling height at the wall where the headboard will stand, not in the middle of the room.
• Sockets. A 160 cm wide frame will cover roughly 1.6 m of skirting. Check which sockets it hides before you decide which wall the bed goes against.

Mattress depth and bed height

Mattress depth is separate from bed size and it changes how the finished bed feels. A standard UK mattress is 18 to 28 cm deep; deep or pillow-top models reach about 35 cm.

Measured floor to the top of the mattress, low beds sit at 30 to 45 cm, standard beds at 45 to 60 cm and high beds at 60 to 75 cm. Ottoman frames are usually at the higher end, because the storage box raises the whole base.

One hard limit worth checking before you buy: an ottoman frame is rated for a mattress of a given height and weight, set by the maker, because the gas pistons have to lift it. A heavy pocket-sprung mattress above that will either not stay up or will slam down.

Bedding and duvet sizes for a king size bed

Bedding is sold by bed size, and the sizes are not obvious from the name.

Some brands sell a king duvet as 230 x 220 cm; either fits a king size bed. Pillows are the other trap: a standard UK pillow is 50 x 75 cm, while a king size pillow is 50 x 90 cm and needs its own pillowcase. Two king pillows side by side measure 180 cm, which is wider than a king size bed, so most people use standard pillows on a king and king pillows on a super king.

Fitted sheets are cut for a mattress depth as well as a bed size. A standard fitted sheet copes with a mattress up to about 30 cm; above that you need a deep fitted sheet.
