Emperor Bed Size

An emperor bed is usually 200 cm wide and 200 cm long (6ft 6in x 6ft 6in). It is not a standard UK size. The largest standard size you can walk into a shop and buy is the super king, 180 x 200 cm, and everything above that is made to order.

There is no British Standard for emperor or caesar, so the figures vary by maker. Some emperor beds are 200 x 200 cm, others 215 x 215 cm. Always ask for the centimetres in writing before ordering anything above super king.

What is the biggest bed size in the UK?

Among standard sizes, the super king at 180 x 200 cm. It is the largest size that mattress makers produce to stock, that bedding is sold for in ordinary shops, and that carriers handle as a normal delivery.

Above it, in order: emperor (200 x 200 cm), then caesar (240 x 200 cm). A few specialists will build wider still, but at that point the bed, the mattress and every sheet are bespoke.

Is a 7ft by 7ft bed an emperor?

Roughly. Seven foot square is about 213 x 213 cm, which sits between the common emperor (200 x 200 cm) and the larger 215 x 215 cm interpretation. Because there is no standard, a bed sold as 7ft x 7ft and a bed sold as an emperor can be different sizes. The number in centimetres is the only thing worth trusting.

What room does an emperor bed need?

The mattress is 200 cm wide, and the frame around it is normally 206 to 215 cm. With one 60 cm walkway that is a room of at least 275 x 310 cm; with a walkway on both sides, closer to 335 x 310 cm.

Getting it in is the harder problem. A 200 cm mattress will not go through a standard 762 mm doorway flat, and an emperor frame usually ships in boxes over two metres long. Measure the stairwell, the turn at the top and the landing before you order, not after.

The bedding problem

This is what decides it for most people. A super king duvet is 260 x 220 cm and sits on the shelf in any department store. Emperor bedding is a specialist order: duvets around 290 x 235 cm, fitted sheets cut for 200 x 200 cm, and pillowcases to match. You will pay more, wait longer, and have fewer choices every time you replace a set.

If you want a bigger bed and you want to buy sheets on a Saturday afternoon, the super king is the honest answer.

Super king or emperor?

Go emperor only if the room is genuinely large, if you have measured the route in, and if you are comfortable ordering bedding to size for the life of the bed. In every other case the super king gives you 90 cm of width each, which is the same as a single bed per person, for a fraction of the cost and none of the supply problems.
