5 side lift ottoman beds, from £289 to £1139 in king size (150 x 200 cm mattress). The base lifts from the side instead of the foot end, on gas struts and with the mattress still on it: the answer when the foot of the bed stands against a wall, a radiator or a wardrobe.
The Pimlico, in grey or natural hopsack with a low 84 cm headboard, is made from single to king. The Brompton, in soft grey velvet with a plain 100 cm headboard, is built to open from the left or the right side, in double or king. The Mayfair, in light or dark grey fabric with a padded 121 cm headboard, opens from the left or the right according to its maker, in double or king. The Julian Bowen Clara and Alana are TV beds as well: a lift in the footboard raises a TV of up to 43 inches by remote control, and each has a drawer as well as the ottoman storage. Leave room at the side, not at the foot
A side lift base rises along one long side of the bed, so the space you need is beside it, where you stand to lift it. In king size these frames measure 159 to 168 cm wide on the outside. The Pimlico has a low 84 cm headboard, the Brompton a 100 cm one and the Mayfair a 121 cm one; Julian Bowen does not give a separate headboard height for the Clara or the Alana.
The two TV beds are long, 229 cm in king size, because the TV lift is built into the footboard. Measure the length of the room as well as the width before you order.

What is a side lift ottoman bed?
An ottoman bed whose base lifts from one long side instead of the foot end. Gas struts hold the base up with the mattress still on it, and the storage underneath covers the whole bed.
When is a side lift better than an end lift?
When the foot of the bed is against a wall, a radiator, a wardrobe or a chest, an end lift base cannot rise. A side lift only needs room beside the bed.
Which ones are TV beds?
The Julian Bowen Clara and Alana. A lift built into the footboard raises a TV of up to 43 inches at the press of a remote control, and lowers it out of sight. The TV is not included.
How deep is the storage?
Julian Bowen gives 33 cm for the Clara. The makers of the Pimlico, the Brompton, the Mayfair and the Alana do not publish a storage depth, so we do not print one.
What sizes are they made in?
All five in king size. The Pimlico is also made in single, small double and double; the Brompton and the Mayfair in double; the Clara in double and super king; the Alana in double.
How are they delivered?
Free to the UK mainland. The Pimlico and the Mayfair arrive flat packed in 3 to 5 working days, the Brompton in 3 to 7. Julian Bowen deliver the Clara and the Alana, usually within 7 days when in stock: two people carry the boxes to the room you choose.
