What is in the planner

  • Page 1, start here. A 10 cm scale bar to check your print, the five steps below, and the room size each bed needs with its walkways.
  • Page 2, the room grid. 1 small square = 10 cm, 1 large square = 50 cm, a thick line every metre. It holds a room up to 9 x 12.5 m.
  • Page 3, the beds. Two cut-outs of each UK size. The dashed line is the mattress; the solid line is the typical frame around it; the thick edge is the headboard end.
  • Page 4, the rest of the room. Bedside tables, chests of drawers, wardrobes, a desk, chairs and a cot in example sizes, a 76 cm door with its swing, 60 cm and 75 cm walkway strips, and a grid for drawing your own pieces.

The bed cut-outs at 1:50

At 1:50, 1 cm on paper is 50 cm in the room. A bed size names the mattress, but the floor the bed takes is the frame's, so each cut-out is drawn at the median outside size of the frames sold on this site in that size: 152 measurements across 73 frames, published by their makers and read on 3 October 2026.

Bed size Mattress Typical frame, outside Cut-out on paper
Small single 75 x 190 cm no frame data 1.5 x 3.8 cm

Small double 120 x 190 cm 125 x 201 cm 2.5 x 4.0 cm
Double 135 x 190 cm 149 x 205.5 cm 3.0 x 4.1 cm
King size 150 x 200 cm 163 x 213.8 cm 3.3 x 4.3 cm

Frames vary more than mattresses: a frame can be up to 25 cm wider and 29 cm longer than its mattress. When you have chosen a bed, draw its own outside size on the blank grid of page 4. The full tables, frame by frame type, are in the UK bed sizes guide.

How to use it

  1. Print at 100% or "Actual size", never "Fit to page". The scale bar on page 1 must measure exactly 10 cm.
  2. Measure the room wall to wall in centimetres. Note the door and which way it opens, the windows, radiators, sockets and anything fixed.
  3. Draw the walls on the grid: one large square is 50 cm.
  4. Cut out the bed and the furniture. Thicker paper makes the pieces easier to move.
  5. Keep at least 60 cm to walk where you get in and out of bed, 75 cm to be comfortable, and leave room for wardrobe doors and drawers to open.

Questions

What does a 1:50 scale mean?

Everything on paper is 50 times smaller than in the room: 1 cm on paper is 50 cm, 2 cm is 1 m. A 3 x 3.5 m bedroom is drawn as a 6 x 7 cm rectangle on the grid.

Why does each bed have two outlines?

The inner, dashed outline is the mattress, the size the bed is sold by. The outer one is the frame, which is what has to fit the room. On the frames sold here, the frame adds 2.5 to 25 cm to the width and 7 to 29 cm to the length.

Are the furniture sizes on page 4 standard?

No. They are example sizes to get you started. Measure your own furniture and draw it to scale on the blank grid at the bottom of page 4.

Can I print it for a class, a client or a blog?

Yes. The planner is free to print, copy and hand out, with no sign-up. If you write about it, a link to this page means people always get the current version.

Will it fit?

Measure your room for a king size bed.

A king size bed frame takes about 160 x 215 cm of floor. Add 60 cm for one walkway, 75 cm each side to be comfortable. Type or slide your room size in centimetres: the plan redraws to scale.

A 320 x 340 cm room fits a king size bed comfortably.80 cm on each side and 125 cm at the foot: room for two bedside tables. Minimum for any king size bed: 280 x 300 cm with 60 cm on both sides; 310 x 300 cm for 75 cm on both sides.
160 x 215 320 cm 340 cm

1 square = 50 cm. King frame 160 x 215 cm, bedside tables 45 cm, door 80 cm.
