UK Bed Sizes: Chart in cm, Feet and Inches, Plus Frame Sizes

By King Size Bed UKUpdated 24 October 2026

UK bed sizes chart: small single, single, small double, double, king and super king mattresses drawn to scale

The UK has six standard bed sizes: small single (75 x 190 cm), single (90 x 190 cm), small double (120 x 190 cm), double (135 x 190 cm), king (150 x 200 cm) and super king (180 x 200 cm). Those are mattress sizes. The frame is always bigger: across the 95 frames we sell with a published outside size, it adds 2.5 to 39 cm to the width and 6.5 to 36 cm to the length.

Width always comes first, then length. In shops the same sizes are also named in feet, so a king is a 5ft bed and a double a 4ft 6.

UK bed sizes chart

These are the mattress sizes UK bed makers build to, and the sizes a UK frame is made to hold.

Bed size Centimetres Sold as (feet) Exact inches Also called
Small single 75 x 190 cm 2ft 6in x 6ft 3in 29.5 x 74.8 in Narrow single
Single 90 x 190 cm 3ft x 6ft 3in 35.4 x 74.8 in 3ft
Small double 120 x 190 cm 4ft x 6ft 3in 47.2 x 74.8 in 4ft, three quarter, sometimes queen
Double 135 x 190 cm 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in 53.1 x 74.8 in 4ft 6
King size 150 x 200 cm 5ft x 6ft 6in 59.1 x 78.7 in 5ft
Super king 180 x 200 cm 6ft x 6ft 6in 70.9 x 78.7 in 6ft

Two more sizes are common without being standard. A long single is 90 x 200 cm, 10 cm longer than a single; Which? lists it as a Euro single. An emperor is most often 200 x 200 cm, but makers do not agree on it, and some sell a 7ft square bed under the same name.

King size is the most popular of the six. In Which?'s guide to UK mattress sizes, around four in 10 of its members own a king size mattress, and the double comes second.

The feet are names, the centimetres are the size

UK beds are named in feet and made in centimetres, and the two do not match exactly. A 5ft king is 150 cm, which is 59.1 inches, not 60. A 6ft super king is 70.9 inches, not 72. The 200 cm length goes the other way: 78.7 inches, a little more than the 6ft 6in it is sold as.

A mattress made to a true 5ft x 6ft 6in would measure 152.4 x 198.1 cm, which is 2.4 cm wider than the mattress a UK king frame is made for. Whenever you match a mattress to a frame, compare the centimetres, never the feet.

Bed frame sizes: the outside measurements

The chart gives the mattress. What has to fit your room is the frame, and the frame is bigger by an amount that depends on its design: side rails, a padded headboard, a footboard or an ottoman base all add to it. The table gathers the outside sizes published by the makers of the frames we sell, 199 measurements across 95 frames, read from the product pages on 24 October 2026.

Bed size Mattress Frame width, outside Frame length, outside Median frame Frames counted
Single 90 x 190 cm 92.5 to 109 cm 200 to 212 cm 100 x 202 cm 15
Small double 120 x 190 cm 124 to 140 cm 200 to 212 cm 129.5 x 201 cm 14
Double 135 x 190 cm 138.5 to 174 cm 197 to 220 cm 149 x 206.8 cm 57
King size 150 x 200 cm 153.5 to 189 cm 206.5 to 236 cm 162 x 214 cm 91

No frame is the size of its mattress. The tightest, a single, is still 2.5 cm wider than the mattress it holds, and every frame in the table adds at least 6.5 cm to the length.

The type of frame changes the size more than you might expect. On king size, the median metal frame measures 154.9 x 210 cm and the median upholstered frame 165 x 219 cm: 10.1 cm wider and 9 cm longer for the same 150 x 200 cm mattress. On 11 October 2026, 18 of our 25 king frames under 160 cm wide were metal; the others include wooden frames such as the Mortlake and the Osterley, at 156.2 cm. If a king is a tight fit in your room, start with metal king size bed frames; if you want storage, our king size ottoman beds run 157.5 to 173 cm wide. The king size bed dimensions guide breaks the king frames down by type, with headboard heights.

How much room each bed size needs

Start from the frame's outside size, then add space to walk. We use 60 cm as the minimum walkway, enough to get in and out and make the bed, and 75 cm as comfortable. Which? suggests at least 76 cm (2ft 6in) between the sides and foot of the bed and the nearest wall or piece of furniture.

The table uses the widest and the longest frame we sell in each size, so every frame of that size fits. The widest double and king are both the Hendon, a velvet bed with four drawers in its base, at 174 and 189 cm; without it, the widest king is the Julian Bowen Hannah at 179 cm.

Bed size Room width, bed against a wall (one 60 cm walkway) Room width, 60 cm both sides Room width, 75 cm both sides Room length, 60 cm at the foot
Single 169 cm 229 cm 259 cm 272 cm
Small double 200 cm 260 cm 290 cm 272 cm
Double 234 cm 294 cm 324 cm 280 cm
King size 249 cm 309 cm 339 cm 296 cm
Super king 259 cm 319 cm 349 cm 289 cm

The super king needs less length than the king here because the longest king frame we sell, the Southgate ottoman at 236 cm, is longer than any of our super kings.

Add 45 to 50 cm on each side for bedside tables, and keep 40 cm clear at the foot, or along one side, to open an ottoman. The will a king size bed fit my room calculator runs the numbers for your own room. To try layouts on paper, print the 1:50 bedroom planner, with cut-out beds in every UK size.

How much width each sleeper gets

Bed size Mattress width Width per sleeper, two sharing
Single 90 cm 90 cm for one sleeper
Small double 120 cm 60 cm
Double 135 cm 67.5 cm
King size 150 cm 75 cm
Super king 180 cm 90 cm

Our view: two adults should not go below a king if the room takes it. A double gives each of you 67.5 cm, 22.5 cm less than a single bed, and its 190 cm length is 6ft 3in, short for anyone over about 6ft. A king adds 7.5 cm per person and 10 cm of length, and a super king gives each sleeper the width of a single. A small double suits one adult who likes room to spread out, or a guest room. For one adult in a small room, a single is wide enough; check the length instead.

UK bed sizes vs US and European sizes

Imported mattresses are where size names cause the most trouble. The same name means a different size in another country, and a mattress only 2 cm too big will not sit inside a frame with a lip.

Foreign size Centimetres Nearest UK size In the UK frame
US twin 99 x 191 cm Single, 90 x 190 cm 9 cm too wide
US full 137 x 191 cm Double, 135 x 190 cm 2 cm too wide, 1 cm too long
US queen 152 x 203 cm King, 150 x 200 cm 2 cm too wide, 3 cm too long
US king 193 x 203 cm Super king, 180 x 200 cm 13 cm too wide, 3 cm too long
European 90 x 200 90 x 200 cm Single, 90 x 190 cm 10 cm too long (it fits a long single)
European 140 x 200 140 x 200 cm Double, 135 x 190 cm 5 cm too wide, 10 cm too long
European 160 x 200 160 x 200 cm King, 150 x 200 cm 10 cm too wide
European 180 x 200 180 x 200 cm Super king, 180 x 200 cm Same size

Read the table by centimetres, not by name: a US queen is almost a UK king, and a US king is bigger than a UK super king. The country by country comparison is in is a queen size bed bigger than a king.

Duvet and sheet sizes for each bed

Bedding follows the mattress, not the frame. A fitted sheet is cut to the mattress size, while a flat sheet and a duvet are larger so that they hang over the sides. These are the sizes in Which?'s bedding table:

Bed size Fitted sheet Flat sheet Duvet
Single 90 x 190 cm 180 x 260 cm 135 x 200 cm
Double 135 x 190 cm 230 x 260 cm 200 x 200 cm
King size 150 x 200 cm 275 x 275 cm 225 x 220 cm
Super king 180 x 200 cm 300 x 265 cm 260 x 220 cm

How to measure for a new bed

  1. Measure the wall the headboard will stand against, and the distance from that wall to whatever faces it, at floor level. Note radiators, sockets and the swing of the door.
  2. Take the frame's outside width and length from the product page, not the mattress size. Our product pages give it in the size table wherever the maker publishes it.
  3. Add the walkways from the room table: 60 cm as a minimum, 75 cm to be comfortable, and 40 cm at the foot or the side to open an ottoman.
  4. Measure the way in as well: the front door, the turn of the stairs and the bedroom door. The king size bed dimensions guide has a section on doorways, stairs and corners.

Bed size questions

What size is a double bed in the UK?

135 x 190 cm, sold as 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in, which is 53.1 x 74.8 inches exactly. The 57 double frames we sell with a published size measure 138.5 to 174 cm wide outside. More on the double bed size page.

How wide is a king size bed?

The mattress is 150 cm wide, sold as 5ft (59.1 inches). The frame is wider: 153.5 to 189 cm outside across our 91 king size frames with a published size, and 162 cm for the median one.

How long is a king size bed?

200 cm, sold as 6ft 6in (78.7 inches exactly). That is 10 cm longer than a double and the same length as a super king. King frames run 206.5 to 236 cm long outside.

What size is a small double bed?

120 x 190 cm, sold as 4ft x 6ft 3in. It is 30 cm wider than a single and 15 cm narrower than a double, and two adults get 60 cm each. See the small double bed size guide.

What size is a single bed?

90 x 190 cm, sold as 3ft x 6ft 3in. A small single is 75 x 190 cm and a long single 90 x 200 cm. See the single bed size guide.

What size is a super king bed?

180 x 200 cm, sold as 6ft x 6ft 6in: the width of two singles side by side. Super king frames run 182.9 to 199 cm wide outside. See super king bed size.

What size is a queen bed in the UK?

There is no standard UK queen size. Which? lists the 120 x 190 cm small double as queen-size, and some UK retailers use the name for a double or a king, so ask for the centimetres before you buy. A US queen is a different bed, 152 x 203 cm, close to a UK king.

Is a queen size bed bigger than a king?

No. In the US, a king (193 x 203 cm) is 41 cm wider than a queen (152 x 203 cm). In the UK, where queen usually means a small double, a king is 30 cm wider and 10 cm longer.

What is the biggest bed size?

The emperor. The most common emperor is 200 x 200 cm, 6ft 6in square, and some makers sell a 7ft square one. Of the six standard UK sizes, the super king, 180 x 200 cm, is the largest.

What is a 7ft by 7ft bed called?

Usually an emperor. Some makers keep the name emperor for 200 x 200 cm and call a 7ft square bed a large emperor, so the centimetres tell you more than the name. The emperor bed size page compares the versions.

Shop bed frames by size

Each product page gives the frame's outside size wherever the maker publishes it. We do not sell small single or emperor frames.

How we got the frame figures: on 3 October 2026 we read the outside width and length published by the maker of each frame on sale here, wherever the maker gives one. That is 152 measurements across 73 frames. They are the makers' figures, not our own tape measure, and each product page shows the figure for that frame. The mattress sizes are the standard UK sizes, as listed by Which?.

Will it fit?

Measure your room for a king size bed.

A king size bed frame takes about 160 x 215 cm of floor. Add 60 cm for one walkway, 75 cm each side to be comfortable. Type or slide your room size in centimetres: the plan redraws to scale.

A 320 x 340 cm room fits a king size bed comfortably.80 cm on each side and 125 cm at the foot: room for two bedside tables. Minimum for any king size bed: 280 x 300 cm with 60 cm on both sides; 310 x 300 cm for 75 cm on both sides.
